The prestige is a psychological thriller based on the 1995 novel of the same name by author Christopher Priest. The film takes us through the thrilling story of two aspiring magicians Alfred Borden(Christian Bale) and Robert Angier(Hugh Jackman) and their journey to become the best illusionist.
In the opening scene, we are introduced to John Cutter(Michael Caine), a stage engineer, depicting the different acts of an illusion, significantly the final act, "prestige". So from the very first scene the audience know what they are in for. Borden and Angier work as assistants to a local magician and at the same time carry out their small magic shows in local joints and clubs. The two clearly show their capabilities and aspirations in the world of magic. While moving on in the story some accident occur at one of the magic shows which dramatically ignites a dreadful rivalry between Angier and Borden. We see the two part ways to achieve their personal goals in the career of illusion. From this moment we get to witness a thrilling competition between them which in some ways is beyond the line.
Director Christopher Nolan along with his brother Jonathan Nolan has written an outstanding screenplay in which the audience ride in a journey of thrilling tale of illusion, rivalry, relationships in a well developed Victorian-era setting. Nolan stood upon in his reputation for complex plot setting and throwing it at the audience like a master. The story keeps us sit tight in our seats to look for what comes next and it never disappoints in any of the frames. As the plot goes on the we can see different behind the scenes of some actual tricks and the mechanisms. The film always succeed to build a tension in the audience. The viewers an in for a roller-coaster of twist and turns throughout. Though some major twists are revealed in the climax of the movie which nobody saw coming.
The lead actors Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman give a magnificient perfomance. Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson also do a wonderful job as supporting actors and always making their presence important to the plot. The film does a marvelous job in entertaining us for 2 hours 10 minutes but I assure you the main sparkle is in the final act or you can say Prestige.
